It is generally accepted today that the formation of the first German runic system - Futhark - dates from the first centuries A.D. Indeed, this time can be considered the time when the runic Art took shape in the form that then existed in Northern Europe - although not without changes - until the late Middle Ages. However, the origins of Art are much more ancient. There is no doubt that the very first signs drawn with a human hand or carved from bone and wood had a magical character. The oldest monuments of this kind belong to the Paleolithic and date back to the XVII-XVI millennia BC. Examples of such monuments are runic-like symbols inscribed with ocher on a mammoth skull found on the Mezhirichi site in Ukraine, signs carved on European rocks, or “sun wheels” carved from the bone and found on the Sungir site near Vladimir. Already in the midst of such ancient graphics, we can find symbols that became the pre-forms of future common magic signs: swastikas, cross, Celtic cross, wheel, some runes, etc. Probably, gradually these symbols, received in revelations or in other ways, collected and accumulated, underwent classification and changes. Around the VI-V millennia BC An unprecedented upsurge of culture in Central Europe belongs, accompanied by a powerful development of crafts and arts, including magic arts. From that time, clay figurines of deities, magnificent ceramics, the remains of sanctuaries, temples and settlements reached us. The ceramics of this culture, discovered on the territory of modern Romania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, is rich in magical images, many of which should probably be considered direct precursors of the development of both the runic alphabet and non-alphabetic European magic symbols. Even later, in the III-I millennia BC, the previously developed systems of magic signs began to gradually turn into sacred alphabets, which were understood in those days as a set of sacred symbols with the assigned phonetic meanings, which made it possible to use these signs for writing. Thus, the related Phoenician and Etruscan alphabets appeared, and later Greek and Latin. A runic letter dating back to the alphabets of the Northern Italian group has a similar origin - i.e. to the alphabets of the northern Etruscans and Italian Venets.
